In mid-August, Kay Burley of Sky News interviewed our Director Rob Lawson (as chair of CIWEM Water Resources Panel), as part of a wider piece on the 2018 summer weather and climate change. Rob said that we need to be more ambitious with meeting water leakage targets. Better data is helping us to target leaks more efficiently, but, more can be done with regional water transfers and water efficiency to help with managing changes in weather.
Rob also featured in the BBC’s Reality Check feature confirming that water consumption in a dry summer typically increases by 10-25% compared with winter periods, however, this could be as high as 40-50% in specific areas for short periods during heatwaves such as the one we have been experiencing this month. Rob also talked to Water Briefing featured about Artesia’s work on the recent Ofwat report on the long-term potential for making deep reductions in household demand. The report identified four future scenarios that illustrate how personal water use could be reduced from the current national average of 141 litres per person per day to between 49 and 83 litres per day by 2065.
